Mika climbed the school rooftop before dawn because it was the only place where the city sounded honest. The train lines were still asleep. Neon signs blinked like tired eyes. Her phone vibrated with a message from Ren that she did not remember receiving yesterday.

REN: If you answer this, be ready to lose something.

She laughed under her breath, but the laugh did not feel like hers. Below her, a delivery truck skidded around the corner and stopped inches from a stray cat. The driver stared up at her as if he had been waiting for a signal.

Mika typed a reply anyway. "Who are you?"

The instant she hit send, the rooftop wind stopped. A memory pushed through her skull like broken glass. Ren was standing beside her now, breathing hard, lab coat open, eyes red from two nights without sleep.

REN: I told you not to answer. The timeline only bends once quietly.

He grabbed the phone. The screen filled with messages that did not belong to this morning. One promised a funeral. Another promised a confession. A third simply said RUN before the signal collapses.

Below them, the city alarms began to scream.
